Deep within the captivating rolling meadows, dwelt a shepherd boy. His life was unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His main role was mainly to tend to his flock of rams.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the breezes across the solo tree on the peak were his main associates. Day in day, watching over his responsibilities instilled in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
But, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome scheme.
Stories of predators prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear here and played a prank on the townsfolk.
One morning he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to help but saw no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This trick laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
